Contrails and Chemtrails: the Truth is Out There! Debunking the Myth. Again.

Hey Mom,

I just wanted to ask about the last article you wrote. Are chemtrails another name for contrails? I’ve heard of that but I didn’t know if it was different or a different way to say the same thing. Is it bad for you to live too close to where the contrails are above you?

Thanks,

Conned by the Chemtrail Cabal

Hey Connie,

Chemtrails and contrails are two different animals. Period. Primary difference? Contrails exist. Chemtrails are a paranoid legend bandied about by conspiracy theorists. The story goes that if you look closely, you’ll see that some (not all, mind you, just some) contrails look a little different than other contrails. Or they last longer than ordinary contrails. The reason alleged? Why, because the government is using some flights to disguise the spraying of toxic chemicals all over the world, of course. Yep. Variations on the theme exist but it generally has something to do with secret experiments, intentional extermination of people or at least the effort to make them very sick, and so on. This has been debunked. Repeatedly. Have a look at the Discovery Channel’s investigation from 2007 if you still aren’t convinced.

As for the second part of your question? Well, it probably isn’t healthy to spend too much time inhaling jet exhaust for precisely the same reasons that it can’t be good for you to breathe too much of any other kind of exhaust, either. While contrails don’t pose the threat that the chemtrail proponents promulgate, there’s no denying that jet emissions aren’t exactly greening the planet or helping us to breathe any easier. Estimates suggest that aircraft emissions are responsible for approximately 2% of human-generated global carbon dioxide emissions, CO2 being the most threatening greenhouse gas.   Here’s a CO2 calculator that purports to tell you how much carbon dioxide is generated per passenger on a flight between any two airports you pick.

Besides the threat of climate change due to global warming, the World Health Organization publishes information condemning the effects of air pollution and encouraging governments around the world to work towards improving air quality which is expected to pay off in many, many lives saved. Particulate matter in the atmosphere is known to cause chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and even damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys. Continual exposure to air pollution has been shown to affect the lungs of growing children and aggravate or complicate medical conditions in the elderly. In terms of managing environmental health concerns, aircraft emissions are a small but certainly not insignificant part of a very, very big picture.

All right. Be responsible. And quit asking the conspiracy nut down the street for advice,

Mom
